I've found that not all frames have perfectly equidistant braze ons also, so this may or may not come into play here. This is why I prefer the the post style cantilevers as they offer more adjustment .
Really though, it sounds like you need a "break" from either the 720's or the bike or whatever. What I do when find myself "struggling" is just drop it.... and laugh at it's absurdity ! I'm getting frustrated over what ? ? Not worth it ! So ... I say to myself ... "this is silly ... I Know How To Do This".... and guess what .... the solution always comes quickly. When you're in a "state of struggle" , the solutions are still right there, but you're blind to it from the self created "tornado"... lol.
