FWIW, I was out there back in May picking up a few guys that were doing a ride. Long story short, there was a mix-up in directions and I found myself driving west on 8 Mile road from US197. It ended (and I mean *ended*) with a pretty rugged climb, but it was a really cool road that I wished I was on my bike and enjoying instead of semi-lost in the van. Might be worth further reconnoitering, if you're looking for ideas. :)
