I've used a timbuk2 backpack that has 2500 cubic inches of space.  Volume will 
be his problem rather than weight. My backpack weight was about 15 pounds and I 
could barely close the thing because the sleeping bag and sleeping pad took up 
a lot of room, didn't carry a tent or cooking stuff. See if you can wrangle up 
a large saddle bag for him. I had this saddlebag for items I wanted easy access 
to http://www.bikebagshop.com/minnehaha-bags-c-781.html.  No problems with 
handling. But at the end of the day my shoulders and back were a tiny bit sore. 
nothing too bad.
