Jack, I connect with this, as I go back and forth between using the Acorn Rondeneur and a Carradice Barley bag. I definitely prefer bags that are above the fenders over panniers whenever possible. My two favorite rear bags are the Barley Bag mounted on the SQR release and an old large, wedge shaped Rhode Gear bag. The SQR keeps the bag off the back of my hips, and is absolutely the quickest on & off the bike. You could pick up a used Nelson LP for short camping trips and skip the whole rear rack all together. I suspect that one of Rivs large trunk bags would be the most aerodynamic option.
