Thanks for the replies everyone. I was not sure if Riv downtube shifters worked with 9 speed cassettes. I have read that 9 speed shifting is difficult using friction due to the smaller spacing for cassettes but I guess you have to acclimate to using smaller shifts to hit the right gear.
