Hey Shawn, I outfitted my 52 cm Bombadil with a Big Front Rack and big ol' Ortlieb back rollers during a tour this spring and really liked it. In the back I have a nitto R-14 top rack with medium saddlesack. I like having more direct control of the majority of my gear this way, and used a Sam Hillborne (the bombadil's predecessor) with the same setup. I should say, though, that I've never tried putting panniers on the back of either of those bikes and therefore have no basis for front/back load comparison.
