Cecily, with your gorgeous wonderful Betty, you don't actually "need" to get over your fear of diamond frame bikes. You are going to have a wonderful bike that lets you do a zillion bike things. If you never ride a diamond-frame bike, so what?
I suspect that as you ride your Betty, you are going to get more comfortable, and you'll find that types of cycling you now have some trepidation about-- which might be for example, riding on gravel, riding down steep hills, riding up steep hills, or other scary bikey things-- will become less scary, and this might include riding a diamond-framed bike too. For me, taking it easy and trying new things gradually works better than forcing myself; that might be true for you too. I also find, and you might too, that riding with other people inspires me to go a little beyond my comfort zone (for example, er, riding down a long rocky muddy singletrack, ahem). It's important, though, to find like-minded riders who don't sneer at your bike and are comfortable riding at your pace. Looking forward to hearing about how your bike works out.
