I haven't tried duck tape but I have used gaffer's tape, it is used in the photo industry to attach things like lights, grip gear, wires etc. to walls, floors, etc. anything that could have the finish marred by regular tape. When removed it leaves no residue and does not effect the painted surface. I've used it on my bikes in a similar manner as you.
