pam hopefully someone can suggest a riv-ish option, but for non-rivish 
there are a ton of shops which will rent you a hybrid bike in the city, it 
runs about $20-30 a day.

a lesser known secret is that if you stay at a kimpton hotel, they have 
bikes you can checkout for free.   i've stayed at the harbor court (public 
bikes, but only 2-3 so you have to get one early in the morning), i've also 
stayed at the drake, which does not have any bikes on-site but if you talk 
to the concierge they will give you a coupon for a free rental from a place 
around the corner.

of course if you're not staying in a hotel this would not apply :)
