This prompted me to take a look at the original invoice for my Atlantis in 2003. The serial number is NOT listed on the invoice but I respectfully suggest that including it would be useful information. I recorded it on the invoice myself but there's a higher level of credibility if it's original information from Rivendell.
Another level of protection in establishing ownership is to register your bicycle with your local police dept. Granted, they will not put out an APB if you report your bike stolen. However, the registration process usually involves identifying the bike in detail (my local PD's form includes space for the SN).
