I've had similar reactions to my bikes ... vehicles, including the Herse, the two customs, the tr*k*, and the Citroen Acadiane. And the Fargo. I think many bike shop employees, even in high-end, mostly carbon fiber shops are interested in well designed and executed bikes.
I've taken my Rivs; even Fargo; heck, even the 1958 Herse, to a high end roadie and mtb shop (High Desert in Rio Rancho, more Carbon, more of the time) where they have gone out of their way to find solutions to problems. I do spend quite a bit of money there, but I think, more than that, if you present yourself as an intelligent and well informed cyclist, they will go the extra mile.
