As someone who actually used axes as a teenager, I can't see how "artisianal" really adds anything to an axe's efficacy. I remember using an "artisianal" axe in Kenya to cut through 2' branches trimmed from the trees surrounding our house: it had been hand forged over a charcoal fire and believe me, it was less effective than the mass produced Sears axe that my father had brought along with us -- and even that one was dull with a head that was loose on the handle.
Note that the young African men, employed by the tree trimming company, climbed these large trees (don't know their type; they had pretty pinkish/white wood) barefooted and bare chested, and hacked through 30" limbs with pangas -- themselves hand forged.
