I thought this photo came out nice. My buddy Stevo had a weekend birthday
bash for his daughter at his mother-in-law's ranch on Muesebach Creek SE of
Fredericksburg. My daughter was among the guests, so we had planned a
morning ride while the girls were sleeping in, and I drove in early this
morning with his bike and mine. He has a Reno ride after labor day, so his
mind is on training for the climb.
Started off in light rain, but Texas summer rains don't cover much
territory. We rode to Luchenbach and climbed on to our rest stop at the
Old Tunnel Wildlife Area, which is on top of the divide between the
Guadalupe and Pedernales Rivers

About 50' below us, as the name implies, about 4 million Mexican freetail
bat mamas are napping. Their offspring, along with 50 million others, are
in the nursery cave in Breckenridge - 50 miles away. The daddies stay in
Mexico. The mamas feed them 5 times each night - astounding they find
their own. Certainly a cool place at sundown, since you have good access
to the tunnel outlet - one of the few places you can get up close and
personal with the emerging bats. Here's a short video taken a few years
ago.

From May to October, all the airports in the region have a 45-minutes
embargo every evening around the bat emergence, since it blocks their
radar.

Anyway, it was a quick ride down to some great strawberry and pecan
pancakes waiting for us. The girls picked the fresh strawberries yesterday
and Stevo's BIL roasted them with the pecans to make the pancakes - he's
quite a chef. Oh yes, the ride - we had about a 5-mile downhill before we
got to the slight climb at the Muesebach creek divide - we were flying
downhill.

Here's my buddy Stevo.

We've been riding together since 6th grade (also fly fishing, camping and
kayaking). We rode together in college in Austin. Rode together with and
without our ex-wives (all of them).

Now our teenage daughters are best friends, and we do all these things with
them, as well.
