Don't know if I'm helping or hindering here, but Continental has a 42 mm 'cyclocross' tyre with some side knobs. Here<http://www.conti-online.com/www/bicycle_de_en/themes/cross/cyclocross_speed_en.html>. Don't know anything about them.
I'm also checking out tyres in this category & size range for a planned (i.e. approved by the better half but currently lacking finance) Hillborne trail-bike build. Has anyone worked out the maximum size that will fit in a Hillborne frame without fenders? In this photo<http://www.flickr.com/photos/79246467@N03/7462314858/> from Riv's own flickr it looks like they've used the 54-584 Schwalbe HS 315<http://schwalbe.de/gbl/en/produkte/tour_city/produkt/index.php5?flash=1&ID_Einsatzbereich=9&ID_Produktgruppe=38&ID_Produkt=169&ID_Artikel=164&info=1&ID_Land=38&ID_Sprache=2&tn_mainPoint=Produkte&tn_subPoint=Tour/City>, but I have no idea what the actual measurement of that tyre is.
