Ski to Sea (aka the Bellingham Olympics) is a 93 mile, 7-leg relay race
from Mount Baker to Bellingham Bay. My principal and a group of teacher
buddies have been doing this event for a few years. XC Ski-downhill
ski-run-road bike-canoe-XC bike-kayak. Their mountain biker decided to
retire, so I was asked to join the team. The mountain bike leg is about 13
miles long and mixed terrain and surfaces, but not extremely technical.
They started allowing cyclocross bikes a couple years ago, and though the
mountain bike would be more comfortable in a lot of spots, the 'cross bikes
are faster overall. They also decided to change the name of the leg to
"Cross-Country Bike."

Country Bike? Sounds like a job for my Riv! I have a couple of mountain
bikes, but knew the Riv would be faster overall.

I pre-rode the course on Saturday with JB greens. What fun! The tires
worked great on the fairly dry course. Alas, it rained all night, and all
day Sunday - which required a last minute switch to 'cross mud tires. The
Michelin Tires were labelled 700x30, but actually measured 34mm (pleasant
surprise!) The Silver sidepulls had plenty of mud clearance, and worked
fine in the muck. I did have one mishap fairly early in the event - I
leaned over to far on wet pavement, lost the front and laid it down.
Luckily, it was a slow/tight/technical 90 degree turn. That did cause me to
be a bit more cautious, and possibly the minute I needed to crack Top 100
glory.

So, the bike did great and the engine wasn't as weak as I'd feared. I
finished 170 out of nearly 500.
