Him MIchael, I've used the large and medium on a Nitto front rack and the medium is more secure that the large on the narrow rack, but it was never too big of a deal either way. I then put the large on a VO Porteur rack. The platform of the rack is ideal for holding the large Wald and is very secure.
And to answer your question, the bag/basket combo is perfect. I've yet to buy enough groceries or anything else that won't fit inside. And like Brian in Seattle, I use a cargo net to secure it. Also, my large basket is on a low trail bicycle which did make a very noticeable and positive difference than when I had a medium basket on my Ram.
