It's the day after the JBK Haleiwa Metric Century ride here on Oahu and I wish I were back on the north shore on my bike instead of taking lunch at work.
As some of you may recall I'd asked folks to vote for which bike I should ride for this event. the final vote came out surprisingly even. The vote was on my blog, on RBW, and on the Bike Friday list. Here's how it panned out: Bike Friday NWT - 12 votes Rivendell Quickbeam - 17 votes Rivendell Hunqapillar - 16 votes http://goo.gl/NTuHd You picked the bike, and that's what I rode! I had a great time but didn't take too many pictures. Almost none in fact though my riding partner for the day did. I don't have access to his shots yet so I can't prove it happened. GPS tracks can be faked. :-) Anyway, rather go into the details of riding the spectacular North Shore of Oahu on an almost perfect weather day (a bit too much vog for my taste) in this email, I'll just point you to my blog entry for the ride at: http://www.statrix.com/2013/04/haleiwa-metric-century-recap/ The only problems I had were a bit of dehydration (it was a very warm and humid day...didn't drink enough on the way out, but fine on the way back after upping my intake), and the fact that the ride is a bit short of 100km and I wanted to keep riding afterwards. Okay that last bit isn't true. The ride is a bit short but I was fine with it. The ride is flat enough (very flat actually with just two or three small climbs) that the Quickbeam is perfect for the the ride. My buddy Keith rode it on a fixie and his only regret is that he hadn't spent enough time on his new saddle and was a bit sore afterwards. I've logged plenty on that Brooks B-17 Special and was in great shape at the end. Next year I think I'm not going to put up a vote and take the Hunqapillar, not because I actually need gears out there, but because I think the Hunq is jealous of the QB at the moment. The Quickbeam (once again) attracted a lot of attention at rest stops with all the usual questions...is that steel? How much does it weigh? (No clue but if I lost 5 pounds...well you know the drill.) This year (last time I rode this was 2010) there were more folks who just admired it for what it is and thought it was a great bike to ride. I didn't see any other Rivs but there were at least a few other bikes with fenders and racks. The ratio of 'sensible' bikes seemed to be a bit higher than last time I did this ride (2010), but it's still not a huge percentage of the total. Anyway, it's was a blast and my Quickbeam was the perfect choice. Thanks for choosing my bike!
