Lot's of good advice here already. Additional 2-cents: Missing Link in Berkeley is having their annual "Trek Fest" sale - might be something there. We had a used Bikes Direct Daws as my son's first road bike - was decent, but had the aforementioned low end parts. He currently has a KHS Flite 210 - kind of their entry touring bike. Takes bigger tires - have 32's on it right now, and it looks like it could go to 35-38's. Lot's of braze-ons, on a tig welded steel frame. Usual low-end parts, but we've been upgrading over time.
And, if you're interested, we have an REI Diamondback hybrid that we'll sell you real cheap. Kid outgrew it, but he's ridden 60k rail trails on it. 19 in frame. Rivish set up.
