It is plenty strong laterally. The buckle is pretty burly. When tightened down, the basket gets "smooshed" between the front hook and the slanted rear rack upright. I rock the basket and the rack flexes. No movement. I've carried 15-18 lbs. in it with no problem whatsoever.
