Freedom from hassles is a matter of having sufficient reach. I recall seeing some 27" sidepull frames back in the day that had enormous clearance, and barely made it with long reach sidepulls. You may have issues with a frame like that. With cantilevers, some frames and some brakes have room to move the pads down.
