I've never seen the "Reply to Author" and don't see it now... I'm using the latest Safari on Mountain Lion. Haven't seen it in Explorer 9 on my Windows 7 PC at work either.
What I do is hover my mouse over the name of the sender, so a card with the name, e-mail address, photo, etc. of the author displays and then highlight the e-mail address to copy it. The mysteries of Gmail...
