I live in the sub tropics and it's hot and humid 9 months out of the year and my clothe + shellac bar tape have held up pretty well for the past two years. No additional coats of shellac and not sticky or tacky to the touch. It has seen plenty of rain and abuse. Shellaced clothe is suprisingly tough IMO.
