I haven't ridden the southern most section of the Thermalito trail, just the stuff from the foothill staging area north. I expect its fairly wide and smooth though perhaps steep. From the map it looks like a small road off foothill just west of Kilkare dead ends at the south end of Thermalito. Thermalito joins up with the trails up to the ridge from the staging area on foothill. It runs along the west side of the ridge a bit below the ridge line trail. There are 2 or three places you can cut over to the ridgeline, and they join up eventually. You go on through Augustine Bernal park and back into Pleasanton Ridge. At a gate you can either go up by a water tank or take a right and go around, which is quite nice. Then you can take a left on Sinbad creek or continue to Bay Leaf. Either of those will take you down to the bottom and the trail that connects to Kilkare, which is Sinbad. Bay leaf is less steep than Sinbad. Once at the bottom you can go all the way up to cowing on Sinbad creak or you can go back up to the ridge line on Shady Creek, or the Loop trail or the Turtle pond trail. Cowing splits off of ridgeline east of were Sinbad Ts into cowing. Sometimes the north part of Sinbad Creek gets a lot of hoof prints and can be kinda lumpy on account of em. Sometimes there are goats by the trails on the north section of the ridgeline trail. All that stuff is wide trail or fire road. There are also a few single track variants along the general north south route.
Of course the most straight forward route with the least climbing is to go up Kilkare road to the end, cross the wood bridge, cut through the yard on your left to the Sinbad creak trail and take that all the way up to cowing trail. Maybe I can try and catch you when you pass through Sunol on Sunday, doubt if Ill be up for going past 580 though.
