When I was riding 650B I had good luck with Hetres, even better with the Soma. The 700 Grand Bois Cypres I am riding now are avoiding flats on combination road, paved, and limestone trails. These probably are not the right choice if you will be riding places with larger stones. Also I've never ridden out west, but it sounds as though goat head thorns would overwhelm the Grand Bois.
