Anecdote, illustrating how *not* to carry your pets: When I was married my wife and I owned a tandem, to which I fixed a milk crate to carry our two Shi Tzu, fastened down with shortened leashes. One one early ride the female decided to take a dive over the side and ended up hanging by her neck down the left side of the bike, kicking madly. Of course I panicked and hit the brakes, whereupon we all fell over -- on the left side. The dog and the wife were, luckily, not hurt, but it was close. I suffered the usual abrasions and bruises.
