Man, at the risk of sounding politically incorrect, I'd say get a 
beater...single-speed if terrain allows... for winter. On the other hand, 
as others say, fenders, Boeshield application for your frame, waxing, and 
cleaning the salt and sand sludge will help a lot...Rivs are tough and if 
it's got one of the JB paint jobs, it'll survive.
