Well, I'd suggest Iron Horse to Canal Trail, and then cut through Heather Farms Park and the Rancho San Miguel neighborhood to North Gate Rd. Not only does it avoid traffic, it also gives you a glimpse at one of the first modernist, Usonian-inspired sub-divisions. (architecture joke)
