I would give a big thumbs up to getting one of those giant chains from kryptonite (one version is called the "New York"). She can leave it wrapped around where ever she plans to keep her bike at night and use a smaller U-Lock while traveling during the day. Only problem is the lock will probably cost as much as a "beater" bike. Also everything around here costs an arm and a leg. Maybe better finding a beater where you live and sending it to her?
