Yes, another vote for loose headset. They can be hard to see on a cursory inspection, esp. if it's just a little loose, but what you're describing is exactly behavior I would expect from one. What i do is lock the front wheel with the brake, put my stomach on the seat to weight the bike, and try rocking back and forth. The only other time it was anything else, in my experience, is when I was assembling a cheap cruiser and there was a similar knocking, but it was a poor-fitting stem quill rocking back and forth in the steerer.
You might also check your wheel bearings--try moving the wheel side to side in the fork to see if there's any lateral play.
