I've been scoring up the outside front end of my right chainstay on the Fargo when shifts from the 36 to the 46 end with the big ring dragging the bottom run of chain up between the stay and the inside of the ring. The chain is only about 50% worn per my Park chain checker and it is reasonably clean and lubed -- "reasonably" meaning that I don't clean it after every ride in the dirt (dust and sand) but do so after every few such rides. One of the cheaper SRAM chains, original 46/36/24 rings on the Sugino XD2; bastard home-made cassette if it matters, which it probably does not. 8-sp XT rd, LX fd. 7 cogs positioned in the 1-7 spots with two spacers at the back end.
I know I can install a bolt-on device to prevent this, but I want to find the problem and fix it, not install a work around. I've ridden doubles and triples on the same dirt for years without this happening. So, what gives? Is it a chain issue? Time to buy some of those higher quality KMCs? (Again, the current chain on the Fargo is a low level SRAM.)
