I used an Atoc tandem roof rack <http://www.atoc.com/tandemtopper.php> with the side brace to cart my Surly Big Dummy on the roof of my car. It worked well. Even if you go with the Thule rack (which is the Atoc rack with a different sticker) I'd recommend tracking down an Atoc "side brace" to stabilize the bike... especially if you plan to drive on dirt roads.
