Once upon a time when I lived in Austin, TX, I found a Raleigh DL-1
abandoned in my front yard. I took it in, amazed at it's alien features
and appalling brakes. I cleaned it and lubed it, and then realized it must
have been stolen. I called the police, and told them the story, described
the bike, and gave them my number. A few days later, I got a call from a
South African fellow who'd had a DL-1 stolen from his front porch. I
invited him over, and he ID'd his bike. I was sad to see it go, but happy
to know it was home. I soon found a used DL-1 and enjoyed it tremendously
for awhile. This was before Mountain Bikes, so I thought I was very
original on dirt roads and trails. The only problem, other than the brakes,
was the gearing was too high, so when Mountain Bikes appeared from
California, I thought that was the main feature. That and better brakes.
There is almost no more personal a violation than bike theft. Almost. Still
interested in the circumstances. I am vigilant, but the threat of theft
puts a damper on some bike rides in the Phoenix metro area.
