Eric......I used the standard SKS (because I had them) then added my own uber long rubber mudflaps that allow the back wheel easier removal since they easily flip out of the way on the rear and the front goes nearly to the ground making for a super dry ride on wet pavement. I have metal fenders on my deraileur bicycle and while I like the looks the SKS (or the Planet Bikes) are better for practical reasons. You can squash them and generally abuse them and they keep on working fine. Metal fenders however can dent and get mangled looking if you are the casual type. They both work, it just depends on your level of carefulness IMO.
