Nice outing!

Do kids ride bikes to explore, spontaneously, on their own, the way we
did back a generation or two ago? Or are most so scheduled and
monitored that rides have to be organized? I remember starting out,
age 7 or 8, extending my rides beyond the immediate area of our house
in Clinton, MD, very early '60s (near the hotel where they captured
John Wilkes Booth) and exploring our little neighborhood, even (my
GAWD!) crossing busy Woodyard Road to ride through the little forest
to a long abandoned and partly burned Tara-type mansion (so it
appeared to my eyes), or, in the other direction, to explore the woods
and swamp to the east of our little community. Moving to India at age
9, my rides expanded further still: a large suburb (Sunder Nager, near
the Old Fort and the zoo0; the city of Bangalore age 11-12, at least
to circumabulate the large, manmade Sankey Tank lake; greater Delhi
age 12-13, and by age 15-16 I was riding all over the countryside
(Kenya, outside of Nairobi).

All of this without parental supervision or even parental permission
or knowledge. As long as we turned up for dinner all was well.

My daughter on the other hand, rising 11, won't go further, on-bike or
off, than our little cul-de-sac by herself; perhaps to a nearby park,
1/4 mile away, if with friends.

Others? Others' children?
