Joe, you have gotten lots of good input. Let me add just a couple of
observations. The 46/36/24 will yield a much better shifting pattern than
the 46/34/22. The steps between gears as you shift rings will make it
easier to find the right next gear.

I have used 7 spd on a triple and really liked it. I commuted with it and
it worked well. I have never used 8 speed, but eventually returned to 9
speed. Two reasons. The HG cassettes shift really well with a better
failure history than any of the 7 speed freewheels currently, or ever
available. Second, I found running a 12 ( and now an 11) allowed me to run
a smaller big ring, which always makes it easier to get to smaller middle
and small rings. Perhaps I like a higher big gear than you (about 100 gi
for commuting) and Vermont has lots of rolling hills so getting some extra
momentum on the downhills helps a lot on the uphills. I run a 48/34/ and
either a 26 or 24 with a 12- 28 9 speed. When I shift between the big and
middle ring, I always know the next gear is exactly 2 cog clicks away.
With a 46/36 combo it is exactly one click away.

A 24x36 is a pretty low gear. How often do you actually use it? Might it
be more useful to have a narrower range for every day and throw on the big
cogs for loaded touring & mountain climbing?

Finally, I have not had any problem shifting either 7 or 9 speed with
Silver BEs. Yes, every once in a while I do get a ghost shift in 9 speed.
But not very often and usually it just means I need to tighten the D ring
a smidge. For some reason I get virtually no ghost shifting with my Silver
DT set up .
