I am also not an engineer, but this is an interesting topic to me. If anyone has a link to an article or paper describing the different forces on the rear triangle in a traditional road bike please post it.
Also, I wonder if assuming the forces are different would the asymmetrical stays create a noticeable effect to the rider? What about different sizes of chain stays or seat stays on each side? -Aaron Y.
