David: I have now ridden my reno'd Bridgestone MB-2 with the Sturmey kickback shift/coaster brake about 50 miles. Here's a set of pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157628383880621/with/6708095501/ Mostly, I like it a lot. It shifts quickly and crisply. It is smooth in either gear. And the coaster brake works very well. Also, it had not occurred to me before I built it up for this bike, but it's usually very convenient that when you use the coaster brake to slow or stop the bike, when you begin pedaling again you're almost always in the lower gear. (On the other hand, sometimes not (such as when you use the coaster brake in low gear), and that would be a minor irritation, but I have a canti brake on the front and use that most of the time for minor speed modulation, so not a real issue for me.) Only other (again minor) downside is that if you use the coaster brake gently to slow the bike down, you can hear the hub "wanting" to shift back and forth with minor fluctuations in pressure on the brake. But again, I use the hand brake for that purpose, so not an issue for me. No info, obviously, on long term durability.
Riv content: Thread started about use of one of these on a SimpleOne. And, I guess, maybe the B'stone connection... The SRAM is also available without a coaster brake. I lean in the direction of the Sturmey Archer Duomatic only because Sturmey Archer products are so serviceable. I am not sure of the serviceability of the SRAM. I have had some feedback that the kickback shifiting of the Sturmey is problematic, but it may just be a "getting used to it" type thing. Pudge, when you have a chance to use yours can you comment on this?
