Problem solved, with the soap suds solution: Deflated tire. Liberal application of of soapy water at the bead. Inflate a bit, work the tire to get it seated, that inflate the rest of the way. Most of the asymmetry was gone by that point, then I worked it a bit with a Park Tire Seating tool - - basically a set of channelocks with concave grip for the tire - - and the tire now seats perfectly and looks great.
