Am with Jim on this. Had a Nexus equipped bike that barely made it through one winter before needing complete replacement. (Shimano took care of it under warranty). And changing a tire in serious sub-zero weather was a challenge, to say the least. Although the older Sturmey 3 speeds seem to be the best of the lot.
Getting back to the bike, and looking at the photos again, it just appears to be a normal setup. Maybe could run it single speed, but doubt it. Grant does mention it has a specific purpose. One that I'm stymied about. Then again, it's not a worry since I didn't order one.
