I'm assuming that you don't know the area at all. El Segundo is
unusual in that it is an enclave - it's really a hidden gem. There is
no through traffic. It is bordered by LAX on the north,  Standard Oil
property to the south and east. Of course, the Pacific is to the west.
If at all possible try to get an apartment there. I was apartment
hunting with a friend in El Segundo, and the prices were in line with
adjacent areas. The South Bay Bike Path runs along it's western edge,
so it would be possible to bike commute from any beach city from Santa
Monica all the way down to Torrance. Manhattan Beach is pricey,
Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach are less. I wouldn't look in areas
east of LAX. Westchester is north of LAX and is at least a decent area
that is geographically desirable. The train (green line) doesn't go
through areas I would recommend.
