Steve: Yes, a VO Polyvalent! Just the VO porteur front rack on it too. Anne and Rob:
Portable Settlers is simply the Travel Edition which you can get from Amazon or if there's a local toy/board game store in your area. Otherwise: http://www.amazon.com/Settlers-of-Catan-Travel-Edition/dp/B00028X3ZO Re: saddlesack. It's actually the Small! Fully loaded, my rig was light: http://www.flickr.com/photos/judah42/5701330998/in/photostream The reason was that out of the three of us, Corey had the tent and cooking stuff in panniers and a front rack as well as tarps and so on. Thus, my personal load was light. That said — I lean towards packing smart with minimalism in mind. I based my kit off of Grant's "Kit for One Night Out" article. I didn't have a tent, sleeping pad or cooking gear with me but I can't imagine, having seen what those items were like in size, having to go bigger than a Medium or Large Saddlesack. If you attach the pad, tent or sleeping bag to the top of the bag behind you, as I did, or on a small front rack, I still imagine that a Medium or Large Saddlesack is just fine. My gear inside the small saddlesack was plenty for an overnighter. I had on some Outlier pants, an Icebreaker mid-weight LS top with a Rapha jersey on top of that for the ride. In the bag, a gilet, a Patagonia LS wool baselayer, a Patagonia down sweater (which is really a down jacket that compresses to the size of a grapefruit but is oh so toasty), Smartwool hiking socks for camp/sleeping, toothbrush/ toothpaste, mess kit, bandana, full toolkit (made up of small smart bits) and spare bungies and ziploc baggies. I could have used some room to tote food perhaps and I think a folded mussette bag would work well near the end of a ride to pick up food to carry on my back or small runs. I think obviously you can go both ways — I've read and learnt from the kit that Anne's posted in the archives and from others so you can carry more for sure. It depends if you go solo or with a group. With a group, you can distribute the load a bit more. Looks like this weekend we're going to China Camp and I think I'll be trying some new things... will report back. Cheers!
