When I had my Atlantis, they had Albatross bars.  While comfortable
for rides up to 50 or 60 miles, they did seem a bit lacking on
climbs.  For me, it was the hands being too far back.  And could never
get as comfortable with the hands up near the stem.

And I agree with Charlie that drop bars can give you enough different
hand positions to alleviate hand issues.  This is something where I
have a lot of first, uh, hand experience.

Do use a set of upright bars, but they are alt-bars on my Surly Cross
Check.  Definitely non-Riv style.  But on that bike, they are comfy.
