Generally, I like my Sigma Sport computer. It is a small square
pachkage with a very simple mount. As for the rear triangle... options
with it would include building up the diameter of the seat stay
(maybe?) of chainstay. Or get a Gino's mount, though you end up with a
pokey-outy thing.
Another thing to consider is mounting it on the fork via a Gino's
mount. That's what I do. It certainly gets it out of the cockpit.

I feel a little bit the way you do. I rarely care about speed as a
speedometer shows it, more often I care about time because, commuting,
I use landmarks to determine how much time I need. Particularly
because my commute involves riding to catch a train (so either I'm
absolutely on time or i'm very late). And I too do maintenance by the
odometer.

Now, what I *really* want is a small cheap computer that would let me
configure it so that it defaults to showing the time of day and trip
distance, with an automatic reset of trip distance after a >30minute
pause. But I expect that the interface for configuring such a thing
would probably require an app on my iPhone. :)
