It kills me that it got repainted, and that my doctor refused to trim
my legs 10cm to fit it.

I thought the story was pretty well recounted at the time. There might
even be a Grant post in the list archive. As I recall (gather 'round,
children), an extremely particular customer once wanted Rivendell to
build a fixed-specific mountain bike. That's pretty far outside the
normal offering, but a legitimate bike to want. They also wanted to
spec a lot of the details, though, including a gusset on the downtube.
Grant spent many hours on the phone ironing out details with the
client, back and forth. It may be that some of Grant's recommendations
were vetoed, in order for the customer to get Their Perfect Bike.

The bike got built and painted, but without the gusset. The finished
bike was rejected, and everyone was left with a sour taste. Rivendell
was also left with a bike frame with a cloud over it that
misrepresented their bike design philosophy. To put everything back in
balance, Rivendell stripped the paint, added the frame details that a
Rivendell should have, and sold it at a massive loss.

Chalk it up to legend. I just want to see someone buy it, put on a
fixed wheel, and start wearing it out.
