Actually the mechanical failure turned out to be a mini-blessing. I did have to get the spoke replaced but that meant I gave my bike a good cleaning while I was getting the wheel cleaned up. In addition I put on a new rear tire as the old one was nearing the end of its life. I couldn't quite see what was under the rubber but after 13 months of riding and a few thousand miles it seemed like a good time.
It also got me down to my LBS and I got a few things I'd been putting off; new riding gloves, new foam hand grips for the beater (the old ones were getting pretty sticky and leaving black goo on things...yep, it's a beater), and something else that escapes me at the moment. :-) Also my beater bike is fun to ride in the rain and it looks like there's more of it coming: http://www.statrix.com/statrixblog/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/rain_on_the_way.jpg Aloha!
