Maybe because it rains so much here in Portland grey sidewalls aren't that big a deal. Tan sidewalls on the contrary look as spiffy as new shoes. And are quite rare, only good for a few brief weeks in the late summer.
Also, I think the porousness of the rubber is why they can never clean- up remotely approaching (IMHO) the look of new. Yeah, it seemed like petroleum jelly would be bad for the rubber. That's why I asked if anyone else had done it. The replaceable latex sounds interesting.
