Just having come back from NZ, I highly recommend Kiwibikes in Rotorua, which was the headquarters shop for the SSWC a couple months ago. Jeffson bikes are built by the owner of the shop. Probably not really Rivish whatever the heck that means anymore, but they definitely have lots of cool steel handmade frames, mostly tensing toward the mountainbike, singlespped, full rigid side of things. I saw some nice tandems, touring bikes, bmx bikes There are probably 6 bike shops in rotorua, Bike Vegas has some really nice old bikes on display ranging from vintage Raleighs to old road racing machines to full carbon funnybikes a-la boardman to lots of fun bmx bikes. We did not really get around Aukland at all.
I only rode off road in rotorua, but it was great fun, likr Marin with legal singletrack, lots of redwoods. Pics from the race and of the shops are here on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/targetsalad/sets/72157625301439544/ And riv folks will definitely be interested in the the Excellent sheep show: http://www.flickr.com/photos/targetsalad/sets/72157625203929719/ People may also be interested in the famous future of transportation/carny games, the Schweeb: http://tsaleh.blogspot.com/2010/11/i-schweeb.html Watch out for those lumber trucks and possum roadkill.
