This is something I have struggled with as well. I'm looking forward
to hearing how the goggles work out.

I am currently using two different cold weather eye wear for my
commute. I don't have specific uses for one vs the other, I just
happen to have acquired both over time and use them relatively
interchangeably depending on other, non-weather factors. They are:

Cheap protective glasses. Someone posted a Cool Tools link to some
nice looking protective glasses. I use something similar, although
mine cost about 15% of the cost of the ones shown on Cool Tools. I
won't share a specific link, but to give you an idea, I got them from
the same place I bought my hi-viz safety vest. They cost around six
bucks. The benefits to these glasses are that they support my Take a
Look eyeglass mirror, and they are available in various colors - I
have the clear, smoke, amber and full-on sunglasses versions. At $6 a
pop, its easy to keep multiple on hand, and cheap to replace if they
are scratched.

Visorgogs. I got this tip years ago from Icebike.org and its served me
well. They are particularly good for wearing over prescription
glasses. The Icebike site seems to be down, but you can view their
comments through the Way Back Machine:
