Based on my somewhat limited experience, I'd classify them this way:

R -- Casts a long, even swath of light.  Much less of a "dark zone"
near the front wheel.
N -- Casts a shorter swath of light that fans out a little more.  If
you think of the R's beam as being a tall/long rectangle, the N's
would be shorter and wider.

For my relatively slow commuting speeds (11-15mph), I prefer the R.  I
mount my head lamp on the fork crown, so that also may have an impact
on my preference.
