I think you're right that they are generally similar.  I ran into this a few
years ago and somehow came to the conclusion that the 82mm/"B" version was
correct, but since I couldn't remember how exactly I decided that it seemed
like asking again was a good idea...  Based on Sheldon's info (and if I
understand it), the shorter cable should be a bit better as the angle on
these brakes is a bit less than the 90* ideal so I will probably go with the
82mm.  I was originally thinking that with a front rack it is harder to keep
an eye on things, so the link wire would add some safety, but with a fender
the straddle cable can't drop into the tire anyway so it would be for
ease/convenience...
